Packaging IQ 2.0 will provide data-driven insights to optimise packaging sustainability at scale.
How can it support brands and retailers in designing better packaging? Systemiq Partner Yoni Shiran explains.
A new analytical platform is coming in 2024. Developed by Delterra and Systemiq, with support from the Walmart Foundation, Packaging IQ 2.0 is the next evolution of Plastic IQ, which currently operates across USA, Brazil, and Indonesia.
Since the launch of Plastic IQ in 2021, hundreds of companies have gained informed insights into the actions they can take to shift their plastic packaging portfolio to become more sustainable. Packaging IQ 2.0 builds upon this success, improving the value proposition to better support decision makers whilst scaling up to new markets.
Packaging IQ 2.0 will support brands and retailers in designing better packaging by delivering format-specific and market-specific insights across three core modules.
Module 1: Packaging design
Granular insights on environmental and economic implications of as-is versus alternative packaging designs at SKU x Market level.
Key questions to be answered:
- What is the expected EOL fate, GHGs and cost for each SKU in each market under ‘as-is’ design and under different design alternatives?
- Which materials and formats are most likely to be circular or mismanaged in each market based on existing infrastructure?
- What are the policy-specific impacts, consumer sentiment, supply chain risks, and other relevant qualitative measures per packaging type in each market?
Module 2: Reuse models
Impact of reuse models (e.g., refill-at-store, return-on-the-go, etc) on environmental and economic indicators at SKU level to determine whether a shift to the reuse model makes sense for a product.
Key questions to be answered:
- How will changes in the business model affect the environmental performance of packaging?
- How will changes in the business model affect economic performance?
- Under what conditions do new business models make sense?
Module 3: Portfolio analysis
Aggregated view of environmental and economic metrics across a portfolio of SKUs under different scenarios, along with comparison with corporate targets (e.g., virgin reduction, rContent, RRC).
Key questions to be answered:
- What is the environmental and economic performance of the overall portfolio under different scenarios?
- What share of the portfolio has a good fit with local recycling infrastructure?
- Are global corporate targets being met e.g., virgin reduction, rContent targets, 100% RRC?
