New Roles of the Chemical Industry toward Carbon Neutrality by 2050

Of all the hard-to-abate industries, the chemical industry is considered particularly difficult to decarbonize because carbon is often embedded in its extremely diverse products. The Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo, together with Systemiq, proposes pathways for the chemical industry to reach scope 1-3 net zero while staying within the Planetary Boundaries, as well as new roles the chemical industry should take on. Organised by the University of Tokyo, the hybrid event will present our latest research results and discuss with global leaders how the chemical industry can transform itself into a climate solution.
Daisuke Kanazawa of the Center for Global Commons and Systemiq’s Sophie Herrmann present the findings, with expert panelists:

– Lord Adair Turner (Chair, Energy Transitions Commission)
– Chad Holliday (Co-Chair, Mission Possible Partnership)
– Paul Polman (Co-Founder and Chair, IMAGINE)
– Shinichi Kihara (Deputy Director-General, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan)
– Naoko Ishii (Executive VP, Professor at Institute of Future Initiative, Director of Center for Global Commons, University of Tokyo)

The report, prepared by Systemiq as part of the AYA Earth Partners Coalition, shows the Amazon’s role in driving global emissions to zero. It lays out the pathways to reach net zero in land use, industry, and energy systems while ensuring resilience in the Amazon. An initial set of solutions are proposed to catalyze action for the transition.

The Business Case for Net Zero in the US | Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) – USA.  The United States is committed to a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions footprint by 2050. Incrementalist approaches will be insufficient to meet this goal, which requires combining public policy implementation, technological progress, and changes to operational norms and strategies in public and private sectors. These efforts will be successful only if they effectively galvanize private sector leadership in decarbonizing the US economy. This Energy Pathways USA panel brings together top US private sector leaders to discuss key net-zero challenges and opportunities for their own operations, and those effecting the broader American and international landscape.

Moderator: Jackson Ewing, Senior Fellow, Duke University Nicholas Institute of Environment, Energy & Sustainability

Changing Systems – Resource Solutions for Planetary Stability. In this dialogue, IRP Co-Chair Izabella Teixeira will engage with policymakers and thought leaders to demonstrate how the resource-smart models of the future must be at the centre of transformative climate action. The dialogue will focus on reducing the planetary impact of major resource-using systems, including energy, nutrition, and the built environment. The dialogue aims to:
• Show how decoupling resource use from environmental impact and human wellbeing is achievable in different ways across different global contexts.
• Kick-start collaborative visioning of future provisioning systems, inspiring business and policy actors to work towards tomorrow’s economy – focused on delivering human wellbeing and planetary health.
• Demonstrate how forward-thinking business models are already delivering for people and planet together, and how they can become attractive to investors.
