When it was launched less than 12 months ago, Mission Possible set out an ambitious pathway for industries that had long looked like the big blockers to ambitious climate objectives. Cement, steel, plastics, trucking, shipping and aviation can all reach net-zero CO2 emissions by mid-century, the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) insist.
The programme for this month’s UN Climate Action Summit puts that thinking firmly in the mainstream. The Industry Transition track, led by India and Sweden and supported by World Economic Forum (WEF) and the ETC, will set out the ambition to accelerate transition in hard-to-abate sectors listed above plus aluminium – and identify the actions it wants to see over next two years. Engaging CEOs as “champions of change”, building leaders’ coalitions of five to ten companies per sector, and changing investment patterns will all be on the table.
For SYSTEMIQ, one of the driving forces behind the Mission Possible report, the time is right for clear commitments from the hard-to-abate sectors. “Net-zero is not only possible, but achievable through currently viable technology and at low cost to the consumer”, said ETC Director and Head of Clean Energy Systems at SYSTEMIQ, Faustine Delasalle.
